Summary

As organisations continue to expand through subsidiary operations, governance and compliance functions face increasingly complex challenges. Weaknesses in subsidiary oversight, information asymmetry and local operating practices can create opportunities for conflict-of-interest transactions, financial statement fraud and other misconduct to remain undetected.

At the same time, whistleblower reports often provide a critical channel for identifying potential fraud. However, conducting effective whistleblower interviews requires careful consideration of interview procedures, questioning techniques, cultural factors, anonymous reporting, evidence gathering and appropriate follow-up.

This session will explore common fraud risks and warning signs within subsidiaries, practical approaches to fraud prevention and detection, and best practices for conducting whistleblower interviews. Participants will gain insights into key challenges encountered in practice and learn strategies to strengthen investigative and compliance capabilities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Examine the risks of conflict-of-interest transactions and financial misstatement arising from weaknesses in subsidiary oversight and governance, and identify key fraud indicators.
  • Evaluate practical approaches to fraud risk prevention and control, enhancing early detection and response capabilities.
  • Understand and apply a structured framework for whistleblower interviews, including interview preparation, questioning techniques and post-interview follow-up.
