Summary

The TAX PD Series Green Sessions is an introductory series aimed at early career accountants, expanding on your tertiary and/or CPA studies by looking at real world cases. Please note these sessions are designed for accountants between 1 to 3 years' experience. The topics covered in the series as are follows:

Friday 27 March - Fringe Tax Benefits

Friday 05 June -Trusts & Trust Distributions 

Friday 11 September - Capital Gains Tax

Friday 20 November - Division 7A Compliance 

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the various types of Fringe Benefits and how taxable fringe benefits value is calculated for each fringe benefit type
  • Explain taxation of trusts, analyse trust distribution resolutions, identify key compliance risks 
  • Identify CGT events, calculate capital gains and losses, apply key concessions and exemptions
  • Explain when Division 7A applies, identify common compliance risks involving private companies and related parties, assess loan and payment arrangements, and ensure appropriate documentation and reporting requirements are met

With over 30 years of experience in the accounting and taxation industry, Rupert Cheong brings a wealth of expertise to his role as Director of Alpha Accountancy Services Pty Ltd. Starting his career in a boutique CPA firm, Rupert has worked with CAANZ second-tier firms and prestigious Big 4 firms, showcasing his dedication to delivering excellence across various professional settings.

Rupert is a Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA), a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (FCA), and a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia (FTIA). He also holds a Master’s degree in Taxation from Curtin University.

Specializing in assisting SMEs, Rupert focuses on complex areas such as Capital Gains and Trust Law. As Chair of the Public Practice Committee and an active CPA speaker for universities, he is passionate about fostering knowledge sharing and mentoring future professionals.

In addition to his professional commitments, Rupert volunteers at the Curtin Tax Clinic, where he not only provides guidance to clients but also helps train students in bookkeeping and financial statement preparation.

Rupert’s dedication to his craft and commitment to community education make him a highly respected leader and speaker in the field of accountancy and taxation.
