Summary
The CPA Australia–University of Melbourne Annual Research Lecture is a longstanding partnership between CPA Australia and the University of Melbourne, bringing together leading academics and industry experts to present research and insights on important issues affecting the accounting profession.
Beginning in 1940, the lecture series has been held every year without interruption, making it the University of Melbourne's longest-running continuous annual research lecture series and one of the world's most enduring accounting lecture series.
This year, Professor Noel Harding presents Advancing the Accounting Profession: A pathway to meaningful research collaboration and positive impact, discussing the imperative for greater collaboration within and beyond the accounting profession to meet contemporary challenges, and the critical role of research in facilitating that collaboration for positive societal impact.
He will present a pathway through which members of the profession, including accounting practitioners and researchers, can more effectively realise the benefits of the research currently being undertaken.
The lecture will explore how stronger connections between research and practice can contribute to meaningful collaboration, informed decision-making and positive impact across the accounting profession and wider society.

Professor Noel Harding PhD FCPA
Head of the School of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, UNSW Sydney
Professor Noel Harding PhD FCPA is Head of the School of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation at UNSW Sydney and has more than 30 years’ experience in accounting and auditing as a practitioner, regulator, researcher and educator.
His research focuses on improving the quality of auditor judgements and decisions. His work has been published in leading international accounting and auditing journals and supported by Australian Government and industry research grants, including an ARC Discovery Grant.
Professor Harding is actively engaged with the profession and currently serves as a member of the Australian Government’s Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AUASB). He has also held academic positions at Macquarie University, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Fudan University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
