Summary

Muscle health is often associated with exercise performance or physical appearance. However, skeletal muscle plays a critical role in overall health, supporting movement, metabolic function, energy regulation, and the ability to perform daily activities throughout life.

As individuals age, muscle strength and physical function can gradually decline, particularly in the presence of physical inactivity, inadequate nutrition, and sedentary lifestyles. These changes may impact mobility, increase the risk of falls and injuries, reduce independence, and contribute to poorer health outcomes. In the workplace, maintaining muscle health can also support physical resilience, reduce fatigue, enhance functional capacity, and promote long-term wellbeing.

In this evidence-informed session, Joan Liew will explore the importance of muscle health beyond fitness and share practical actions that participants can apply personally and promote within their professional and community settings. The session will translate current science into actionable approaches that support healthy ageing, workplace wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

Key Topics

1. Understanding skeletal muscle as a key determinant of health, mobility, metabolic function, and healthy ageing.

2. Recognising the impact of declining muscle strength and physical capacity on daily functioning, independence, and wellbeing.

3. Implementing evidence-based habits to support muscle health through progressive strength training, adequate protein and nutrition, and regular movement throughout the day.

4. Applying practical strategies to support healthier lifestyles and wellbeing for both individuals and the clients, colleagues, or communities they serve.
