Summary

Join the CPA South East Metropolitan Regional Branch for this rare opportunity to hear Tom Boyd, former AFL No. 1 draft pick and Western Bulldogs premiership player, share his powerful personal story and practical insights into recognizing challenges before they become crises.

Behind a successful AFL career sat severe insomnia, anxiety and depression, which Tom largely managed alone before ultimately retiring from football at age 23 to prioritize his health. Through his candid account, Tom reflects on the importance of early intervention, support, and the impact of taking a proactive approach to wellbeing.

This thought-provoking session combines Tom's lived experience with practical guidance for accountants and business advisers. Participants will explore how financial stress often presents warning signs long before a client reaches crisis point, and how recognizing these indicators early can lead to stronger outcomes for clients and firms alike. The session will introduce a practical framework for proactive client review, helping professionals identify risks, have meaningful conversations, and connect clients with appropriate support before problems escalate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise early warning signs of financial stress that may indicate a client is at risk.
  • Understand the benefits of taking a proactive rather than reactive approach to client support.
  • Apply a practical framework for reviewing client circumstances and identifying opportunities for early intervention.
